The Shorty Interview
with José Elías
What's your best tweet?
It was an ancient chinese quote by Lao Tzu: "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, show him how to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime..."
What are six things you could never do without?
1. family, 2. friends, 3. health, 4. the Internet, 5. mobile computing, 6. learning something new every day
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
To explain the latest scientific and tech advances, while hopefully helping people become better human beings by understanding our universe
What's your favorite Twitter app?
It's a tie, between the official Twitter apps for iPhone and iPad
Twitter or Facebook?
Each has its purpose and I use them both. Twitter to inform raw data fast, Facebook to provide the details at a leisure pace
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
The #doomsday people who say this is the end of times. Even with our problems, I think we're living the best of times and it will get better
What feature should Twitter add?
Real-time video tweets
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
Carl Sagan (sadly, no longer with us)
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
Hard to say. I think you should just be creative and come up with alternative ways to say things :)
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
I just want the common folk to follow me. It is to them that I write for. Average Joe/Jane who wish to understand the world a little better
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
Yes, for SPAM or for writing content that was simply not interesting or useful to me. I follow people who inspire or teach me new things
Why should we vote for you?
To help me spread the message that we're all in this planet together, that life is worth living, and that our Universe is a beautiful place
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
singularity, space exploration, education investment, tolerance, second chances, inspiring stories
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
With NASA astronauts
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
#eliax - created recently, but most people simply use my @twitteliax name to group eliax-like news together or catch my attention :)
How do you make your tweets unique?
I try to have 98% of them to be meaningful to people in some way. Could be a new discovery, or important news, or something curious
What inspires you to tweet?
The fact that I can reach so many people and touch their lives in positive ways, and maybe even help turn them into better human beings
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Not really. I use it as a tool and only when I have something meaningful (or hopefully interesting) to say. Silence can be a virtue sometimes
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Don't spill every detail of your personal life online. Say something only if it is meaningful in some way to others (learning, laughing, etc)
How long can you go without a tweet?
I'm not addicted to it, but I do publish something at least one a day to keep readers interested and coming for more...
What question are we not asking here that we should?
How are tools like Twitter making this a better world?
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
How about real-time video feeds, so everyone could become a video journalist and touch the lives of millions instantly?
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
The NASA astronauts (which I follow). They inspire kids to be something greater, to understand that we're all here together on this planet
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
@ConanOBrien (Conan O'Brien)
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That it's just a "pubic chat program", as opposed to a groundbreaking tool to communicate with the world
Why should people follow you?
I try to explain complex things about science, the universe, psychology, and technology in simple terms that anyone can understand
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
@ConanOBrien (makes me laugh) and @NASA_Astronauts (makes me learn)
How do you decide what to tweet?
If I think someone will find it interesting, I tweet it. Else it belongs into my personal amusement files and not worthy of tweeting
Why'd you start tweeting?
To reach the world with my message that we're all One. I have big faith in the goodness in humanity, regardless of all the bad things we do
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Yes, it has allowed me to reach new frontiers for teaching people about the wonders of science as applied to the everyday world
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
Report human rights violations on one end, and inspire kids to learn and become exemplary human beings with tolerance towards others
How will the world change in the next year?
As more people use tools like Twitter, they will be more aware of people on the other side of the world, and that can only be a good thing
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
People revealing their personal lives and family problems for the world to see
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Much more integrated and real-time than now, with people much more aware of what's going on on the other side of the planet.
