What's your best tweet?
That's hard to say, but the one that was RT'd by the White House was certainly my most famous!
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
In a professional capacity, I use Twitter for content consumption, latest news, trends. When I tweet, it's more personal. For now...
Twitter or Facebook?
They serve different purposes. Facebook to stay in touch with friends. Twitter to learn from and dialogue with strangers.
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
I spent an entire night laughing quite hard over the #lessambitiousmovietitles trend a few weeks back. That was genius.
What feature should Twitter add?
I wish twitter.com would add the "quote tweet" feature seen on other clients. Better than a RT, easy, convenient. Also, x-ray vision.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
You. You're. Please. I'm Gen X masquerading as Gen Y, but sometimes I can't stand the textspeak! I'm a grammar maven at heart.
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
It would definitely be cool if fellow neurologist and literary God Oliver Sacks followed me.
Why should we vote for you?
I'm just one person. I'm not Sci Am or National Academy of Science. But the world is changed by one person at a time.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
#epilepsyawareness Such an important disease, so many people are afraid to talk about it. Except for the folks at talkaboutit.org! They rock.
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
How do you make your tweets unique?
I'm a stickler for grammar, humor, content, and a great hashtag.
What inspires you to tweet?
Things I read, things I see, the random, disconnected, funny musings I have about life on a 24-hour basis? I think in 140 characters.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Only when I linked my feed to my Facebook page! #lessonlearned
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Be yourself. Be interesting. Be engaging. Be humorous. Be different.
How long can you go without a tweet?
I lasted a few days once. I think I may have been without internet access or overseas.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
Why are there not more powerful women in science? Good question...
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
I think the power of Twitter for research purposes and social good has yet to be harnessed...the future is very exciting.
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
I think Pete Cashmore @Mashable has really revolutionized the world of social and tech and brought it to the people.
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
That award may have to go to Ree Drummond, @thepioneerwoman. Who makes cooking and ranching THAT hilarious?
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That it is a constant stream of mindless drivel. It's a constant stream of mindful, valuable information. Depending on whom you follow...
Why should people follow you?
As a former neurologist who's now interested in social media, I think I offer a unique perspective. Plus, I turn a mean hashtag.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
@Brainpicker is amazing for curating the widest variety of interesting facts and finds on the internet. She's worth a follow, for sure.
Why'd you start tweeting?
I read an article in the New York Times about the virtues of Twitter. I gave myself two weeks. That was a year and 3,500 tweets ago!
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
It certainly has. I've gained friends, learned a great deal, had conversations with idols and mentors, and was just RT'd by the White House!
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
I really disapprove of flaming people on Twitter, calling names, generally being hostile. This isn't the forum for that.
